Introduction

A full-scale Encounternet system was successfully deployed in Santa Rosa Park, Costa Rica to study long tail manakins. 38 base stations were placed over manakin dance display perches in a 2-3 km area to monitor lek visits by tagged birds. A new tag mode was developed for this deployment that maximizes tag lifespan and minimizes battery weight. We also have incorporated a new solar battery charging board for base stations that allows them to operate in the field for longer periods of time. As of 4/20/10 the project is still ongoing, with 31 birds tagged.
